DOUBLE OR NOTHING
Laura Steenberge + Madison Brookshire
April 12, 2024 8pm

Automata is excited to welcome artists LAURA STEENBERGE and MADISON BROOKSHIRE in a program of that features two collaborative works and two solo works.

FROM THE ARTISTS:
Investigations of time and cross-modality are central to both of our creative practices. We have worked on many projects together over the years, as performers in each other’s work as well as others. In 2019, we instigated a more formal collaboration resulting in our video, can-fork-pedal-voice, completed in summer 2023. Double Double or Nothing, our first live performance collaboration, builds off a series of recent works by Brookshire, called the Number Series, that explore the different temporal experiences available in double projection, often creating an uncanny experience of color as both presence and absence. Similarly, at the heart of Steenberge’s performance practice is a meditative, repetitive practice that is influenced by the study of medieval chant, which is essentially the study of how circularity in music evokes eternity.

About the Artists:

Laura Steenberge is an interdisciplinary composer and performer at the crossroads of music, language, gesture, and mythology. Her creative and research practice encompasses vocal composition and songwriting, instrumental chamber works, research on word painting in medieval chant, experiments in audiovisual and ceremonial performance practices, and performance with contrabass and viola da gamba. She lives in Asheville, NC.

Madison Brookshire lives in Los Angeles, where he makes films, paintings, and performances. Finding sympathies between experimental film, music, and art, his work often inhabits areas at the edges of disciplines, inviting viewers to become aware of perceptual processes and the sensuous experience of time. He frequently works with musicians and composers, including Ezra Buchla, LCollective, Laura Steenberge, Mark So, and Tashi Wada.
