Mason Moy String Band
October 27, 2o24 7pm

An ensemble of (mostly) string players weave between field recordings, drones, and tunes, led by Mason Moy. Underneath improvisations and emergent melodies, a layer of drones acts as the background. In response to Mason’s conducting or the improvisations of others, each player is granted autonomy to make the music their own.

About the Artist:

Mason Moy is a performer and composer interested in the meeting points of free improvisation and alternate tuning systems. He believes the horizontal listening required of improvisers (how do we move on from this idea?) complements the vertical awareness performers must have to pull off precise microtonal tuning (how do I fit into this chord?).

His ensembles combine these ideas in a variety of ways. Mason’s first large ensemble experiment resembled a big band, drifting in and out of the jazz idiom to work through these ideas. This iteration, the string band, will draw inspiration from chamber music and folk styles to get at both styles of listening.

Tapetail is Automata’s new experimental sound series, launched in October 2022.

Tapetail presents live events and sound installations featuring the work of experimental sound artists.
We are currently looking to present shows and installations that deal with "liveness" where something about the experience is best presented live, whether through improvisation, special acoustic treatment or audience experience. There’s been a lot of great art happening in the virtual and digital world so now we’re turning our focus back towards bringing people together for sound experiences that are best experienced in a live setting.

Automata’s Tapetail series
is curated by Cassia Streb.
