Tapetail Presents:
Kevin Good
Saturday, January 11, 2o24 5pm, 8pm
Sunday, January 12, 4pm, 7pm

Join us for a deep dive into the works of LA composer, Kevin Good. There are 4 events in this weekend long presentation. A single ticket is considered a festival pass and grants admission to one or all events.

There are several ongoing pieces that have weaved their way in and out of my compositional practice; the main two are The Chords in My Life and Trails. These pieces are perform-able in and of themselves but are also used as musical materials in other compositions.

Saturday’s concerts are comprised of performances of The Chords in My Life and Trails while Sunday’s concerts explore pieces that combine elements of each piece into new compositions

The Chords In My Life (Saturday, January 11th, 5pm) is an ongoing piece I started in 2015. The piece is a series of chords each written on a single index card with the name of a person written above the staff. Each of these chords is a representation of a person in my life.

The way the chords are constructed is very subjective and is intended to be a musical signature or identity of the person. There is no exact rule on how I decide to write a chord for someone; rather an intuitive feeling takes place. Generally, if someone has impacted my life in a memorable way I will write a chord for them. This means some chords are made from life long friends or family and some chords are for people I have met just once.

Trails (Saturday, January 11th, 8pm) was created as a melodic counterpart to the chords in my life. While the chords represent people the Trails represent place. Each Trail piece is a short melody written in a small notebook after taking a hike. The trail pieces are specific to each trail they are written on. The melody reflects the shape and state of the trail at the time of the hike therefore are some instances of the same trailhead being used for multiple pieces.

Trails and Topographies (Sunday, January 12th, 4pm) - An ongoing project of Desoduo (Katie Eikam and Kevin Good), “Trails and Topographies takes Kevin Good’s melodies from his “Trails” project and Katie Eikam’s plant based graphic scores and combines the two into a single work that is then interpreted on various percussion instruments.

Existing Together (Sunday, January 12th, 7pm) - This final concert at the festival celebrates various compositions for larger ensembles that use both “The chords in My Life” and “Trails” as source material. The pieces use this source material to create a melodic and harmonic language that is representative of individual people and places alike.

Tapetail is Automata’s new experimental sound series, launched in October 2022.

Tapetail presents live events and sound installations featuring the work of experimental sound artists.
We are currently looking to present shows and installations that deal with "liveness" where something about the experience is best presented live, whether through improvisation, special acoustic treatment or audience experience. There’s been a lot of great art happening in the virtual and digital world so now we’re turning our focus back towards bringing people together for sound experiences that are best experienced in a live setting.

Automata’s Tapetail series
is curated by Cassia Streb.
