Automata is excited to welcome audiences back into our space with our first in-person seated event since March 2020. (We do require all visitors to wear masks inside Automata's performance gallery.)

Join us for a night of performances from 3 Los Angeles free improvisation groups: Castle Anthrax, Mystic Elevator, and (placeHolder). Each group’s unique sound palate ranges from electronically processed tuba, vibrators on frame drums, distorted vocalization, looping mannequin instruments, melodeon, and feedback.

About the artists:

Castle Anthrax is a Los Angeles-based free improvisation trio featuring Mason Moy (tuba), Matt LeVeque (percussion), and Jack Herscowitz (electronics). Their sound ranges from harsh noise to dreamy, ambient textures.

Mystic Elevator is the improvisation duo consisting of Abigail Whitman (voice) and Jack Herscowitz (electronics), encompassing everything from vocoded synths, bitcrushed bird chirps, and distorted screams.

One fateful night, in the Fall of 2020, three noisy people – M A Harms, Eric Lennartson, and Daniel Newman-Lessler – put together a house show in Somis, CA. Unbeknownst to them, that singular event would spark lifelong friendships and lots and lots of music. Sometimes it’s a soft and simple droning on pump organs accompanying folk melodies; other times it is a fury of feedback and rogue electronics; frequently it is an eruption of a joyous cacophony; and always it is something new, unexpected, and a complete departure from previous performances." ---(placeHolder)
