AUTOMATA's Experimental Sound series TAPETAIL presents:
DesoDuo: Trails and Topographies
Automata’s Tapetail series welcomes contemporary percussion duet DesoDuo for Trails and Typographies. Based in Southern California, DesoDuo’s practice centers on "the unearthing of practices and resonances into handcrafted performances"
DesoDuo has a wide variety of projects including compositions of their own, commissions of contemporary composers, such as Laura Steenberge and Gillian Perry, as well as improvisational music co-created together.
Their newest project "Trails and Topographies" combines two individual practices that each member does in their solo work and creates a new cooperative and coexisting score and performance.
Katie Eikam has been creating graphic scores using plant materials and pen on paper for several years. A specific series of these pieces has been titled "topographies". And deals with the landscape of a place. Kevin Good has written several short melodies, each after going on a hike or walk, this collection is ongoing and titled "trails".
DesoDuo takes these two practices and creates new scores using Katie's drawings and Kevin's melodies and layers them on top of each other, places them adjacent to one another, and juxtaposes each other. This serves as a starting point for them to open a world improvisation exploring the natural world around us and bring that world into the space inside.

Tapetail is Automata’s new experimental sound series, launched in October 2022.
Tapetail presents live events and sound installations featuring the work of experimental sound artists.
We are currently looking to present shows and installations that deal with "liveness" where something about the experience is best presented live, whether through improvisation, special acoustic treatment or audience experience. There’s been a lot of great art happening in the virtual and digital world so now we’re turning our focus back towards bringing people together for sound experiences that are best experienced in a live setting.
