Karl Evangelista Quintet, CuZns
Friday, July 14, 2023 at 8pm

CuZns (Bobby Bradford and William Roper) join Oakland guitarist Karl Evangelista, keyboardist Rei Scampavia, and drummer Robert Lopez for an evening of daring creative music.

CuZns opens the evening, melding roving melodic interplay and bold, wryly abstract spoken word into an inimitable sonic experience. The second set features Bradford and Roper in conference with Evangelista’s trio, offering a program of free improvisation that rides the line between sweetly tender and dizzyingly forceful.

About the Artists:

Filipino-American guitarist/composer Karl Evangelista has been called “one of the most original instrumentalists and composers of his generation” (Signal to Noise), ranking among a new wave of musicians pushing the traditions of jazz and experimental music into the 21st century.

Evangelista has garnered wide acclaim for his work with the likes of boundary-breaking duo Grex, Andrew Cyrille, Fred Frith, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Trevor Watts, Scott Amendola, Ben Goldberg, Tatsu Aoki, and Francis Wong. He has presented at the Great American Music Hall, the United States of Asian America Festival, and Myra Melford’s New Frequencies Festival, and he is a prolific educator, community organizer, and arts activist throughout the Bay Area.

CuZns: Cu - copper; Zn - zink, together equal brass. Two together. Bradford and Roper. Two together. Cornet and tuba. Bradford, a native of Cleveland, Mississippi, is one of L.A.'s supreme elders of improvised music, leading his own groups as well as having played with Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, David Murray, Charlie Haden and John Steven's, to name only a few. William Roper plays tuba, et al, in all types of musical environments, though preferring the opposites of orchestral music and small improvising ensembles. They are both founding members of the trio Purple Gums (with Francis Wong) and the quartet The Obihiro Cowboys (with Michael Vlatkovich and Joseph Mitchell).

Tapetail is Automata’s new experimental sound series, launched in October 2022.

Tapetail presents live events and sound installations featuring the work of experimental sound artists.
We are currently looking to present shows and installations that deal with "liveness" where something about the experience is best presented live, whether through improvisation, special acoustic treatment or audience experience. There’s been a lot of great art happening in the virtual and digital world so now we’re turning our focus back towards bringing people together for sound experiences that are best experienced in a live setting.

Automata’s Tapetail series
is curated by Cassia Streb.
