AUTOMATA's new Experimental Sound series TAPETAIL presents:

ODE
ODEYA NINI

Tapetail at Automata welcomes Los Angeles interdisciplinary vocalist and composer Odeya Nini back to Automata with her performance of ODE.  Composed and performed by Nini, ODE  is an investigation of resonance, extended vocal techniques, performance, and pure expression, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action. Odeya will be performing pieces from her recently released album ODE, recognized as a notable recording of 2022 by The New Yorker Magazine, as well as other original pieces for solo voice.

About the artist:

ODEYA NINI is a Los Angeles based interdisciplinary vocalist and composer. At the locus of her interests are performance practices, gesture, textural harmony, tonal animation, and the illumination of minute sounds, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrète. Her solo vocal work extends the dimension and expression of the voice and body, creating a sonic and physical panorama of silence to noise and tenderness to grandeur.

Odeya's work has been presented at venues and festivals across the US and internationally, such as The LA Phil, Merkin Concert Hall, The Broad Museum, and MONA from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv, Australia, Mongolia, Madagascar and Vietnam. Her performance of I See You was included in The New Yorker’s 10 notable performances of 2021. She is the founder of Free The Voice and leads workshops, retreats and vocal sound meditations exploring the transformative and healing qualities of embodying the voice.

Odeya holds a BFA from the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and an MFA in composition from California Institute of the Arts.

Tapetail is Automata’s new experimental sound series, launched in October 2022.

Tapetail presents live events and sound installations featuring the work of experimental sound artists.
We are currently looking to present shows and installations that deal with "liveness" where something about the experience is best presented live, whether through improvisation, special acoustic treatment or audience experience. There’s been a lot of great art happening in the virtual and digital world so now we’re turning our focus back towards bringing people together for sound experiences that are best experienced in a live setting.

Automata’s Tapetail series
is curated by Cassia Streb.
