AUTOMATED
Ray Chang
A Kinetic Sculpture Installation
April 21-23, 2023, 5pm-9pm daily
Opening Reception: Friday April 21, 5-9 PM
Automata presents the premiere exhibition of AUTOMATED, Los Angeles artist Ray Chang’s singular, uncanny kinetic sculpture installation. AUTOMATED experiments with the juxtaposition of optical phenomena and urban experience by presenting the cyclical nature of daily life through the lens of mechanical processes and cinematic principles. Constructed with wood, 3D printed elements and motorized with DC motors, the sculptural elements depict the interplay of shifting lights and shadows in relationship to the animated cycles existing within the installation landscape. Viewers are invited to spend time and move around the space to experience the kinetic rhythms of this contained urbanscape.
The complex elements in Automated were originally constructed by Chang from 2019-2020, with the goal of exhibiting the work in late spring 2020. However, as with many projects, pandemic restrictions that year prevented the work from being seen publicly. This three day exhibition will finally allow the work to be seen as was intended, as a time-based installation in a darkened space.
This project was made with support by a grant from The Princess Grace Foundation - USA and the Hillenburg Family.
